Open Meetings

These sessions will be organised on Wednesday (June 19th), prior to the Conference. No registration is required to attend these.

1. Declarative 3D - (1/2 day)

Organizers: Johannes Behr, Ph.D. (Fraunhofer IGD) and Kristian Sons (DFKI) will chair this session.

WebGL and optimized Javascript engines have opened up a new class of native 3D web applications. Through software ‘Shims’ and multi-namespace documents, mixed 2D and 3D web applications can be written and driven by through the DOM and other libraries. Several solutions in terms of Declarative 3D languages have been demonstrated in prior Web3D and W3C conferences and groups. In this open workshop, we will examine the implications of these various proposals, including the required X3D nodeset (Profile) and the integration of the different event models.

Agenda:

  • XHR and binary streaming (Johannes, Max)
  • CSS Integration
    • CSS Observer (Kristian, Felix)
    • Custom/Dynamic CSS events (tba)
  • Base types
    • Matrix (tba)
  • Platform Updates
    • X3D 4.0 (Don)
    • X3DOM (Johannes)
    • XML3D (Kristian)
  • Roadmap discussion

3D graphics compression technology continues to steadily improve. The Web3D Consortium has issued a X3D Compressed Binary Encoding Call For Contributions.

We are looking for component technologies that can help improve the current X3D Compressed Binary Encoding Standard.

Geometric or information compression technologies are of particular interest. Our goal is to produce a revision in 2013.

X3D Binary Compression Capabilities and Plans updates are maintained online.

Agenda for the workshop:

  • Introductions, project summary and progress updates
    • Existing Compression Usage for X3D and VRML97
    • Polygon Reduction and Geometric Compression
    • Data-Centric Binary Encodings and Network Streaming
    • X3D Implementations and Benchmark Testing
  • Quicklooks at new candidate technologies, both proposed and being presented at the conference
  • Next steps, group plans, and timeline for continues progress

Workshops

1. Web3D Geospatial Portrayal (120 min)

Organizers: Sisi Zlatanova (TU Delft), Anita Havele (Web3D Consortium)

In recent years, we have seen an explosion of 3D geospatial and geo-referenced information, yet the services and clients that deliver this information are still incompatible and can vary widely. The 3D Portrayal Interoperability Experiment (3DPIE), run by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) in 2011-2012, developed and evaluated best practices for Web3D geospatial visualization services. Now, that work is driving a new standardization effort in the OGC. This workshop will bring together leaders in the OGC and Web3D communities to converge the information standards and services for web-based portrayal of Geo models including city environments. These web services, among their manifold applications in GIS applications and systems, represent fundamental components for mobile application and system development. A significant portion of the session will be dedicated to demonstrations and discussion of the various scopes and approaches to query and visualization.

Participants:

  • Volker Coors (HFT Stuttgart)
  • Juergen Doellner (Hasso-Plattner Inst.)
  • Raffaele de Amicis (Graphitech)
  • Raj Singh (OGC)
  • Mike McCann (MBARI)
  • Don Brutzman (NPS)

2. Mixed and Augmented Reality (90 min)

Organizers: Anita Havele (Web3D Consortium), Nicholas F. Polys (Virginia Tech)

As the applications and opportunities of web-based Mixed and Augmented Reality continue to grow, several Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) are working on complementary pieces of the ultimate solution. From the OGC’s new ARML 2.0 specification to Khronos’s integrated hardware APIs for mobile multimedia, to the Web3D Consortium’s proposal for X3D scene graph and runtime integration, to the MPEG AR Application Format, this workshop will bring these communities together to examine and define the roadmap for future development and standardization efforts. As a canonical Reference Model (RM) for Mixed Reality applications is being developed in ISO (jointly by SC 24, the Web3D Consortium, SC 29 and MPEG), this workshop will establish common definitions and goals for future efforts.

Participants:

  • Raj Singh (OGC)
  • Hafez Rouzati (Georgia Tech)
  • Marius Preda, (MPEG)

Organizers: Christophe Mouton (EDF)

Interoperability and efficiency are are a requirement for today's nimble industries. Distributed, collaborative design is commonplace and Knowledge-based engineering and Just-In-Time manufacturing promise advantages in many sectors. Join leaders from these industries as they share their perspective on these opportunities in experiences developing and adopting formal and de facto standards. Topics can include:Web3D visualization of product and plant CAD models and PLM, Web3D modeling for 3D printing and Web3D for medical industry for example.

3. Web3D and Medical Applications (90 minutes)

Speaker: Nicholas Polys (Virginia Tech)
NEW : Slides

Extensible 3D (X3D) includes new functionality to describe the presentation of volumetric imagery and its integration with the scene graph. In this tutorial, we will introduce the nodes of the Medical Interchange Profile and demonstrate their expressiveness to describe visualization of data from several modalities including MRI, CT, and X-Ray. Attendees will learn practical techniques and pipelines to process volumetric data (such as image slices) into interactive X3D worlds. We will demonstrate processing with open-source tools such as ImageJ, Seg3D, H3D and X3D-Edit to build X3D scenes and applications. Finally, we will demonstrate new developments in X3D volume rendering with X3DOM.

4. Interaction Techniques for Interactive 3D Web Environments (90 minutes)

Speakers: Jacek Jankowski and Martin Hachet (INRIA)

Various interaction techniques have been developed for interactive 3D environments. This tutorial will present an up-to-date and comprehensive review of the state of the art of non-immersive interaction techniques for Navigation, Selection & Manipulation, and System Control, including a basic introduction to the topic, the challenges, and an examination of a number of popular approaches. We hope that this tutorial can aid both researchers and developers of interactive 3D Web applications in having a clearer overview of the topic and in particular can be useful for practitioners and researchers that are new to the field of interactive 3D graphics.

5. Deferred Rendering for improved visual quality (90 minutes)

Speaker: Peter Schickel and Oliver Neubauer (Bitmanagement Software GmbH)

Deferred Rendering enables the author to have pixel correct lighting up to a nearly unlimited number of lights and easily adding modern post process effects. Deferred rendering is often used in the latest state of the art games to improve the visual quality and leaving the fixed function pipeline restriction behind us. Enrich your scene with hundreds of lights and add your desired post process. The new authoring tool BS Contact Studio helps you to create the desired visual effect.

6. BS Contact Studio a 3D scene WYSIWYG authoring tool (90 minutes)

7. Scaling Up: Integrating X3DOM with Whole Body Laser Scan Data (90 minutes)

Speaker: Sandy Ressler (NIST)
NEW : Slides (html)

It’s easy to produce toy applications that demonstrate a cube here and a sphere there. If however, you are trying to create an interface for larger data objects, such as the human body, one encounters a number of interesting challenges. This tutorial will present the issues encountered in the development of a prototype human body browsing system for anthropometry. Lessons learned and pragmatic techniques are highlighted.
